"I... I..." I stuttered, trying to, for the second time this year, admit my love to Aku, only this time I was hoping not to get rejected. "It isn't gonna work, Maki. I'm sorry." He sounded cold and distant, like the words were forced, like he didn't have another choice. Tears spilled down my face, but I refused to let Aku see them. I never had before, and I would definitely not now. The rain got harder and harder as I ran and ran and ran, until finally I was up against a tree, trying to take deep, hard breaths while crying hysterically, harder then ever before. I don't know why I couldn't be happy with Ryo, why I thrived for Aku like nothing else in my life. Love was a cruel thing, it was to me at least, considering it drove me into the most unwelcoming arms I've ever known. My knees buckled and I fell on the ground, practically drinking the gooey mud, but it didn't matter. I could suffocate for all I care. Because without Aku, I was absolutely nothing. "I'm a horrible person. I... I really... I really..." Aku had the same problem as me, he couldn't admit how he felt about me because even though he knew that I returned his feelings, the very thought of rejection scared the words out of his mouth.

It had been about 13 years since I had been in the human world or seen Hani, Aku, and Ryo, and it was time to face the unresolved issues. The things I had left when I had become the guardian of the portal. I flew threw the blue sky faster then I had ever when I was just a plain old witch, and I had arrived at the sea port in a matter of moments, suddenly facing Ryo. "Hello, it's been a while, hasn't it?" I asked as he jumped about a mile back, almost falling over the edge of the dock. His whole face was filled with hope at just the sight of me. Those feelings started churning in me once again, and for a moment there was a hope in me that I could live Happily Ever After with him... until I remembered Aku's face, and just like that, it was all washed away like the ocean. "Maki... is that you? It's been so long!" Ryo was so overjoyed that it made me sick, sick that I had to hurt my poor Ryo like this. I loved him, I really did, but Aku would always win over me. My heart would never forgive me if I stayed with Ryo because in a way I'd be like leading him on. "Ryo... I... I'm sorry. I'm sorry about everything! I really loved you, and I'm... I'm so sorry about everything! Sorry, I... I keep on repeating myself. I really, really wish I could tell you that I love you and that I want to spend the rest of my life with you, but I can't. Because I'd be lying. Because I love Aku no matter what. I don't want to, really, I'd much rather love you, but--" "Then why don't you love me? Why can't you just forget him?!" Ryo exclaimed, cutting me off. "BECAUSE I CAN'T! I NEVER STOP THINKING ABOUT HIM! These past 13 years, it's him I always wanted to be with, I had to think hard to forget about him for even a moment, and even then I could hardly do it!" I exclaimed, crying as snot ran down my face. "You deserve better then me." And those were my last words before I started running from the stunned Ryo, running from what should've been my happiness.

The day I fell in love for the first time was quite a while ago... I was eight and attempting to run away from home, when I saw a boy on a hill, just sitting there with his arms crossed. He had the hardest, saddest face I had ever seen, and that's exactly what drew me to him. "Hi..." I said as I sat down beside him, making a pact with myself at that moment to make that boy smile. He just grunted, not breaking his glare with the lowering sun to see who had talked to him. "What's wrong? You looks sad..."I said and sniffled, wiping away the last of the tears that the kids at the playground had forced out of me. "Do I? This is the way I look all the time. It's rare to see me scowl, and nearly impossible to get me to smile, so please just leave me alone." He was cold and ruthless, but I stared at him anyways, my big green eyes boring into him. "Er... what does impossible mean?" I asked, feeling like a little bit of an idiot for asking, but not really seeing anything to lose. He just sighed. "What will it take for you to go away?" I tried to avoid the dagger plunging through my heart, but I was being pushed away yet again. I felt my eyes stinging as I sniffled, trying to keep my emotions down. "S-sorry... You just looked lonely and... and I know how it feels to be lonely. And not even you can like it." I got up shakily, biting my lip as I started spilling more and more. I felt a sudden grab at my foot, and I fell flat on my face. When I got up, the boy stood over me, looking at me as if I were a piece of crap. "Why does everyone hate me?!" I cried out and brought my knees to my chest as snot dripped onto my cotton dress. "I don't hate you." The boy, who was seriously confusing me at the moment, sat down beside me. "You're different then most mortals. None of the others came to talk to me even though they saw me, because they didn't give a crap about anyone but themselves. You're different. I like you." And I hugged him like anything... And now I know the truth: it was Aku.

Aku was my first love, but Ryo was the first one to cheer me up. I guess to most people that's not much, but to me it was everything. It was a few weeks before I fell in love with Aku, and I had come home crying because of the same reason as before: mean kids teasing me. Being the new girl was like sticking a "Kick Me" sign on your back in this town. "What's wrong?" Ryo asked, stopping me before I could run into the backyard, which he had learned by now was where I went when I felt especially down. "N-nothing. I-I'm fine..." I cried, but ran around back before he could stop me again. He didn't care. He was just my snot nosed neighbor. After about five minutes of weeping I saw Ryo running towards me with a notpad what looked like a pen or pencil. He was out of breath by the time he reached me, but he did manage to choke out, "I'm gonna draw a kitty for you!" "You can draw?" I asked, sniffling and wiping my eyes a little. "I started drawing a kitty a few days ago and now I can finish it for you!" I stopped crying completely when he started to draw; it was so intriguing the way he knew exactly what to do to draw it right. He knew where to shade and where to color in and it was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. "You stopped crying!" He smiled a big toothy smiled and gave me a bear hug, handing me the picture. "I-I'll keep it forever!" I exclaimed and knew that from that day on Ryo would be an important part of my life whether he wanted to or not.

Ryo told me he would always be there for me, and I guess he meant it. After finishing the tasks, I had been sent to the hospital and I've been wrapped in bandages for three days, and Ryo hadn't left my side once. "Please go, I feel bad. You're missing school and you need a shower and.. and..." I tried to rack my brain for a few excuses before I went unconscious, but it was too late. I was out flat. ********************************************************************************************************************************** "I got her from here. You could get expelled if you miss too many days." Aku said as Ryo watched Maki sleep, not taking his eyes off her. "You know she's never gonna know that you're watching her. She's never gonna know that you care about her." Ryo wasn't sure why he told his main competition that, but he felt that if he won Maki he wanted it to be because she loved him more then Aku, not because Aku pretended that he hated her. "So? I'm not complaining, am I?" Aku had an edge in his voice, wishing that Ryo would shut the hell up. He had no idea what danger Aku was in, doing something so stupid as falling in love with the girl he was destined to kill. "Fine. I'll go." Ryo would give him a fair shot to win Maki, though he knew that it killed him imagining up scenarios where Maki would dump him for Aku. As soon as Ryo left the room, Aku knelt by Maki's bed and interlocked hands with her. "I... just want you to know that... that I..." He couldn't get the words out of his mouth, even if she was asleep, so he just leaned in and pressed his lips against hers. Suddenly, her eyes widened as she kissed back, squeezing his hand. "Don't worry, I won't tell anyone you have feelings." Maki said when she broke away, and, if possible, Aku felt himself loving her more then he did before.

(YET ANOTHER MAKI-AKU MOMENT (from my book!)) "I still don't get it... why would a witch need a camera...?" I asked Aku, flopping down on his yellow-green twin bed. "Because even witches are human... sometimes..." Aku smiled the most devilish smiles and snapped his fingers, developing the shot he just took. "Uuugh, I look like a ZOOOMBIE! LOOK AT THE BAGS UNDER MY EYES! THIS IS WHAT YOU'RE DOING TO ME! DER-III-VING ME KUUUUUR-AAAA-ZEEEEE!" Aku shook his head, making me want to slap him again. But in a good way. "I'd keep your mouth shut otherwise this is going on my wall of shame!" He shook around the picture, rubbing it in my face. "You'd better keep your mouth shut or this is going up your ass!" I twirled a ring of fire around my finger, wriggling my eyebrows mysteriously."Dumbutt." And that just settled everything. Hani was right. He did love me.

(I don't know how much of this Aku-Maki moment I can fit, so I may have to cut out pieces of it...) Like big stars in the sky, his silver eyes twinkled, but not a happy twinkle, the eyes seemed sad and lonely. His skin was tan, so tan it was almost orange, and he had long, blue-black hair. I don’t know why he caught my attention out of all the people there. I think maybe it was because he was the only one who seemed unhappy, or at least the least happy in the room. I had an urge to help him, to make the discreet frown on his beautiful face into a blossoming smile. I told myself it wouldn’t be a problem, because I had dealt with unhappy people before, and I felt obligated to make the whole world happy, person by person, and soul by soul, no matter how corny it sounds. "Hi, my name’s Maki and it’s a pleasure to meet—” I was suddenly in midair. I wanted to screech, but it was as if something was caught in my throat and I couldn’t get out. I couldn’t say anything, but I guess I didn’t need to. At the same time the doorknob jiggled at the front of the room (there was a door at the front and back of the room), I glared at him, piercing him with my gracious green eyes. Everyone suddenly froze except for Mr. Depressed/Dangerous and I. I guess he expected I would freeze like the others, but I guess I was immune to his supernatural powers. HAH, YOU STUPID, PERVERTED, STARRY-EYED JERK! He was so surprised he lost his grip of me up in the air, and I came plummeting down. I expected he would let me fall and hit the wood, since he obviously didn’t take a liking to me, but instead he caught me with his muscular arms, and I was like a surprised princess. Sooo should’ve seen that coming. He was surprised he caught me, too. So surprised that he lost control of time and everyone was staring at us: my shining green eyes locked with his sparkling silver ones.

"Aku...?" I bit my tongue for calling him that at the moment. I needed him right now. There was no reason to get him mad. But calling him Aku had become such a habit that I don't know if I was capable of calling him Akimatsu."What?" He sounded sick and tired of me and my questions. But this wasn't a question. Well, not really."I-I'm afraid of the dark..." My voice trembled as I took quick uneven breaths, trying to ignore the looming shadows that took over every corner. "So that was the one thing you were afraid of..." he said, amusement seeming to fill him, as if this was the funniest thing ever. "So then you should be terrified of me.""I... I can't be. I don't know why. I know you're bad. I know I could just ignore you. And I tried to, I really did, but I can't help it. I'm not confessing my love to you or anything, but I just can't seem to leave you alone." I hated how he made me spit things out like that. His literal magic may have no effect on me, but his spiritual magic has been doing me a good deal of damage."Huh." "WHAT?! THAT'S ALL YOU HAVE TO SAY?! JEEEEZ!" I scream, running up to him and slapping him on the head, ruffling his perfect blue-black hair. "What else am I supposed to say, dumbutt?" He quickened his pace, as if to run away from me. HOOOOW RUDE!"Y'know, calling a girl a dumbutt is very--" A shriek echoed through the creepy forest, making me, myself, scream, rushing up to Aku and crushing him with my frightening grip. "What are you doing?!" He sounded angry. But I was in no mood for a fire fight, and he was in no condition for one. "Haven't you ever been so scared of something that you'd grab onto anyone, even if that person was an annoying chauvinist pig?" I was desperate and my voice was shaking. I was holding back tears."Hold tight. We're almost out of here." I had never, ever seen Aku care about anyone besides himself and Ruhi. So... why now? Could it be that he actually cared about me? That I really did grow on him...? (this is a segment of a book I'm working on)

"R...ryo? W-where are we...?" I asked, clutching his neck meekly, sickened that I was so damn weak. The wind whipped my flaming hair (dyed, for the umpteenth time) around my face, making me more agitated. "I-it's okay. I will always protect you, Maki. I will never leave your side. Never." He shook his head, his light brown locks flying around. "Ouuuch..." "WHAT? YOU'RE HURT?!" I screeched, trying to loosen my grip without completely letting go. If I let go and died, all his hard work would be for nothing. "A... a little. A...akimatsu..." He muttered as he climbed the rocky wall that separated us from the portal between us and our destiny. "AKU?! HE DID THIS TO YOU?!" My heart was torn. Aku promised. He promised he'd never, never hurt Ryo. I made him promise on his life. "No... Aku, he offered to take you... but I don't want to lose to him..." I could hear the humor in his voice, and as stupid as he knew he was, I knew he wouldn't have it any other way. Because that was just the way Ryo was. He wouldn't stand to lose to Aku. But I don't know if he has a choice... (I'm writing a book on these characters, so these are just fragments of the book...)
